Solutions For When You Can Still Control the PS5

First, we’ll be looking at how you can fix the PS5 green screen of death.

Sometimes, the PS5 green screen crash will cause a complete freeze, and you won’t be able to control the PS5 anymore.

However, if you’re lucky, it won’t crash completely, and you will still be able to control your PS5.

Or, perhaps the PS5 green screen goes away but you want to make sure it won’t happen again and disturb you when you’re playing a game.

In this case, there are four main solutions you can try, and we’ll go into the details of each in the sections below.

1. Disable Ray Tracing and Performance Mode

The first possible culprit is ray tracing and performance mode. These high resolution video settings can put a strain on your PS5 and your TV, causing the PS5 green screen crash.

To disable ray tracing and performance mode, you can follow these easy steps:

  • Click on Settings.
  • Navigate to Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  • Choose Game Presets.
  • Click on Performance Mode or Resolution Mode.
  • Select Game Default.

The video settings for your PS5 are now reset.

However, most games have extra settings within their software for video resolution.

If this is the case for the games you play, go into the game settings and change the graphics mode to the simplest one.

2. Disable HDR

Next, you’ll have to disable HDR.

To disable HDR on the PS5, you can follow these simple steps:

  • Click on Settings.
  • Navigate to Screen and Video.
  • Choose HDR.
  • Select Off.

HDR should now be disabled. If it was already disabled in the first place, try turning it On, then Off.

3. Disable Rest Mode

When it comes to the PS5 green screen, Rest Mode is considered the biggest culprit.

Many users have reported that they experienced the PS5 green screen crash after using Rest Mode, which is why it’s a good step to try disabling it before doing anything more complicated.

To disable Rest Mode on the PS5, you can follow these steps:

  • Click on Settings.
  • Navigate to System.
  • Choose System Software.
  • Click on Power Saving.
  • Select Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode.
  • Click on During Media Playback.
  • Select Don’t Put in Rest Mode.
  • Click on While Playing Games.
  • Select Don’t Put in Rest Mode.

Your PS5 should never enter Rest Mode from now on. Rest mode can also cause your PS5 to randomly turn on.

4. Delete Unnecessary and Corrupted Files

If none of the previous steps worked, it may be time to try deleting some files. Since this could affect your progress in-game, this should be used as a last reserve.

To delete unnecessary and corrupted files, you can follow these steps:

  • Click on Settings.
  • Navigate to Storage.
  • Choose Console Storage.
  • Click on Saved Data.
  • If you have both PS5 and PS4 games, select the category the game you last played belongs to.
  • Navigate to the game you last played.
  • Click on the Edit button in the rightmost column for that row.
  • Corrupted data should be labeled. If it’s not, you can select the most recent data that most likely caused the PS5 green screen crash.
  • Click on Delete.

This is also a recommended fix if your PS5 has a black screen and blinking blue light.

If this still doesn’t work, you will have to proceed to the steps below.

5. Disable HDR and Gaming Mode on Your Smart TV

If you have a Smart TV, it may have additional settings that are affecting its connection to your PS5.

In this case, you can try the following two solutions.

First, disable HDR in your Smart TV’s video settings.

Second, disable Gaming Mode. It may be named something slightly different, like “Performance Mode”, but you basically want to reset the video settings to their default.

6. Check Your HDMI Cable

Your HDMI cable might be the source of the problem if it’s frayed or damaged.

Check it for signs of wear and tear, and try using another HDMI cable.

7. Use a Different HDMI Port

The HDMI port may also be damaged or dirty. If you can, try plugging your PS5 into a different HDMI port.

Some users have also reported that using a non-ARC HDMI port can also help with a PS5 green screen crash.

ARC HDMI ports are labeled with “ARC”, so simply look for a port that doesn’t have an “ARC” label.

8. Restart Your PS5

The tried and true solution to everything, even the PS5 green screen crash!

If none of the previous steps worked, try restarting your PS5 before proceeding to more complex solutions.

Note: Restarting your PS5 is different from resetting it. If you are unsure of the difference, we have an article on how to factory reset your PS5.

9. Restart and Unplug Your TV

If restarting your PS5 still doesn’t fix the PS5 green screen crash, next up is your TV.

Turn off your TV and unplug it. Then replug it and turn it back on.

10. Update Your TV’s Software

If your TV comes with software updates, try updating it before proceeding to the final step.

11. Contact PlayStation Customer Support

If nothing else works, contact PlayStation’s customer support for their help.
